TeleForum on Self and Identity

Elizabeth

Dear Friends and Colleagues:

The next topic of our TeleForum is:

The Psychology of Interpersonal Presence in Mediation and Negotiation

We will cover:

  • Reflective Functioning: A recognized, core psychological competency which is also related to our capacity for interpersonal presence.
  • Attachment Theory: This widely validated theory explains how the capacity for reflective functioning develops or becomes lost.
  • Client Psychology: Attachment research has demonstrated the existence of definable styles of relating to important others (attachment styles). Learn about your own and others' styles.

We will also use case examples to understand attachment and personality styles. You will meet:

  • Nicole L., a woman who says “yes” when she means “no” while separating from her husband;
  • Greg N., a lawyer whose excessive focus on “results” and legal “strategy” courts disaster for himself and his litigation clients.
  • Victoria, a wife who has been left by her husband but who can’t let go.

How The Forum Operates.

This series consists of four sessions. It is not necessary to have attended prior sessions of the TeleForum to participate in this series.

Prior to each session, participants will read relevant sections of my Pepperdine article on Self and Identity in Mediation and, often, related handouts.

After a few minutes of quiet time at the opening of the session, there will be an informational lecture, followed by a roundtable discussion with members.

Each member's bio will be circulated at the outset of the Forum so that gradually a community will be developed. Guest speakers may also be invited.

Although the Teleforum will not be a "processing group," we will always emphasize the importance of practicing interpersonal presence during the here-and-now of our meetings. This is important!
